I culled together my Best Buy gift cards and bought me this über-universal remote from Logitech. It’s the Harmony 880, and it retails for $299. It was on sale for $249, and with gift cards and coupons, it came to around $100, but I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that it’s worth every penny of the full retail price. Besides, what price can you put on achieving the Holy Grail of home entertainment — exactly one remote on the coffee table?

At first I was a skeptic, having tried before to reach this elusive state of A/V nirvana, but I figured for the price it had better do it all. Well, it does.. and then some. And whatever it doesn’t do, it will learn. basically, if it’s controlled by IR signals, this remote will control it, too.

It comes with software (for PC AND Mac) that let’s you manage and customize it’s features. You type in all your model #s of your various components, and it gets all of that device’s commands from a huge database they have. Whatever is not in the DB, can be learned from the original remote. Then you plug it in via the USB cable and download all the programming to the remote.

The software also let’s you configure what they call “Acitivies” which let you control multiple devices with one button. (click on the picture to see.) For instance, an activity called “Watch DVD” will turn on the TV, the Receiver, and the DVD player, then it will set the TV input and Receiver input as well as issue any specific custom commands you want, like telling the DVD player to start playing. And when you’re done watching a DVD, you just hit the power button and it turns everything off for you.

The software is easy to use and intuitive. There’s no manual to read because the software has a just-in-time help system. The fine-grain level of control makes for virtually unlimited customization. Plus it comes with a base that charges the built-in li-ion batteries, so no more AAAs! And the best part of it all is finally having the one remote that truly does it all.

Every thing went as planned, but I originally had thought I was going to make each shelf one 8 foot peice of plywood and just notch it for the structure. well, it turned out there wasn’t enough room on either side to slide the shelves in, and the 3/4 ply wasn’t flexing enough to make it work. So I ended up sawing the shelves in the middle and adding 4 more supports to the center post. Btw, I scored those halogen work lights on the floor and the tripod for Christmas. Thanks, Grammy!
