So, for some casual reading I was perusing the newly released working draft of the W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Thrilling read, and (in all seriousness) I’m glad to see the progress that’s been made with this document. However, while I consider myself to be fairly advanced in math and color theory, this particular section got stuck in my throat:

“1.4.1 Text or diagrams, and their background, must have a luminosity contrast ratio of at least 5:1.”

Sounds fairly straighforward, right? Well, the document goes on:

“How to Meet Success Criterion 1.4.1
luminosity contrast ratio
(L1+.05) / (L2+.05) where L is luminosity and is defined as .2126*R + .7152*G + .0722B using linearized R, G, and B values. Linearized R (for example) = (R/FS)^2.2 where FS is full scale value (255 for 8 bit color channels). L1 is the higher value (of text or background) and L2 is the lower value.”

Ummm… huh? Wait, what does the “^” symbol mean again? Is there a google translate for this? How is a graphic designer ever going to be able to determine luminosity contrast ratios? Most of us are just barely getting over hexidecimal numbers and web-safe colors!

update: I got the iSight fired up and I’m feeding images to the site. Comments are still broken. (It’s not like anyone’s actually commenting!) Perhaps I should consult with my hosting.
